Polybutene-1 (PB-1): Innovative solutions for Easy Seal Peel in Multilayer films Polybuene-1 (PB-1) is used in combination with Polyethylene (PE), to design reliable, consistent and easy-open packaging systems that allow consumers to easily open packaging without tearing of the film. It provides “controlled” opening force which is a very important aspect for the end-user as this feature also avoids spilling of the filled goods inside the packaging. Seal peel applications based on Polybutene-1 typically make use of cohesive failure mechanism but are not limited and can also employ interlayer delamination peeling.
Besides the PE & PB-1 “dry-blend” approach, LyondellBasell also offers "ready-to-use" compounds for high quality peeling performance in seal peel applications. Based on PB-1, these "ready-to-use" Toppyl compounds enable converters to employ a fully formulated product as 100% of the sealing layer, without the need for blending with PE. The resins reduce complexity for film converters by providing a simple, robust and “ready-to-use” solution that customers can test and specify for seal-peel applications. Potential customer applications include lidding film for PE and PP trays, coffee packaging, bags/pouches for food packaging, vacuum packs, the inside sealing layer for trays, and many more. In BOPP and CPP applications, PB-1 is widely used by customers in combination with PP to produce packaging with tailor-made sealing behaviour.
