Reports in somemedia and voices by self-proclaimed experts on the subject of plastic currentlydon’t let find a reasonable level of objectivity. Either packaging isfundamentally the work of the devil or it shouldn't be plastic, please. To dothis, everyone has to pay, either a climate tax or a plastic tax, or betterboth, at least that is what the EU thinks, but not with a specific purpose sothat it can fit into all households. But what are the really the solutions?

Since 1962, the stand-up pouch has experienced a continuous rise not only due to thesuccess of Capri Sonne. Since 1985, the reclosable bag has not only been perceived as a refillable pack, but has also enjoyed increasing popularity -not only for baby food - thanks to the reclosable closure. It's low weight and small empty volume make the bag more and more popular, especially since mono materials allow the material to be recycled.
In the presentation the different constructions and methods for connecting materials for a secure connection between the film and the spout are presented. The effectiveness and safety are discussed and weighed against each other. Using liquid foods as a filling good, it is also considered whether it makes sense to manufacture the packaging completely yourself or to purchase it ready-to-fill.

The development of sustainable packaging solutions is not a new phenomenon but has accelerated in the past years as awareness of environmental issues has dramatically increased, as has the demand for cutting and recycling household waste, as well as reducing carbon emissions. While plastic flexible packaging is typically generating less CO2 emissions than metal and glass food packaging solutions, it is being challenged concerning the reduction of plastic pollutions.
Sustainability has also become a greater priority for suppliers to the packaging industry and, as a member of CEFLEX, Sun Chemical is working closely with the organization to advance its sustainability and circular economy roadmap for flexible packaging in Europe. A particular focus is on mono-material polyolefin-based packaging due to its share in the waste stream.
Whereas, ten years ago, the technology was not sufficiently advanced to create mono-material polyolefin flexible packaging with similar level of performance (eg. aesthetic, mechanical, functional barrier, seal integrity) as incumbent multi-material packaging, Sun Chemical has been doing significant work in this area to develop “one-stop-shop” solutions including inks, barrier coatings and barrier adhesives.
In this view Sun Chemical is now able to offer various solutions to support converters and brand owners toward the designing-for-recycling of stand-up pouches made of mono-material substrate structures without compromising on food conservation (shelf life) and food wastage.

In Europe in particular, a plastic beshing is gaining ground. Triggered by a microplastic and marine littering debate, plastic is often considered harmful to people and the environment in the media and public discussions. Although the entry of microplastics with and through packaging is not yet clearly quantifiable or proven, there is still a lot of public condemnation.In contrast, floating polyolefin (PE and PP) packaging can be seen in the oceans and the images alone are enormously powerful. Even though all researchers unanimously state that the significant plastic content in oceans and also in nature comes from car tyres, textiles and other sources of plastic. But these plastics are often heavier than water and sink to the bottom where they are no longer perceptible.Marketing reacts quickly and tries to give plastics a more environmentally friendly image. This can be achieved either by using matt varnishes or by switching to paper composites, which, however, seem rather ecologically disadvantageous. One solution seems to be to designate the packaging as recyclable.The situation is now made more difficult by the fact that the brand and the product increasingly communicate via the packaging.
