The stand-up pouch has surpassed the 45 billion mark in Europe on its unchecked advance and will grow to 50 billion in Europe over the next 2 years. This presentation will focus on consumption, market segments, innovations, new markets and products, and the benefits of the stand-up pouch.

Pouches continue to fuel dynamic growth in new categories and for rigid packaging replacement. Even so, there is a lot of scrutiny on structures that aren’t recyclable. This presentation will focus on the market growth and innovative solutions for flexible pouches and will highlight the sustainable challenges and benefits of pouches towards the goals of reducing waste and circular economies.

A stand-up pouch for professional hair care products has been developed in a joint research project of 6 partners for the hair care brand TRINITY. The project intends to promote new hair care products with the design of this kind of stand-up pouch at hairdresser’s shops.
A stand-up pouch with a high content of paper is used. The look is natural and the paper is water-resistant when being used under the shower. Furthermore a coated film is applied to protect the hair care products with a proper barrier.
Aim of the presentation is to take the audience on a journey from the development up to the final product in the shop. The presentation shows the reasons for choosing these basis materials, the kind of used print technology and how the pouches are manufactured and filled up.
The presentation closes with the information how to promote the stand-up pouches in the hairdresser’s shops by the use of a display. Last but not least: the possibilities of a recycling system of such a product will be indicated.

Modern production systems have to fulfill a variety of requirements. On the one hand, the fillers want to reduce the total costs, on the other hand, they have to increase their flexibility to be able to realise different production sizes, packaging materials and designs as well as flavours in short term. To combine these contrasts is a challenge for the machine manufacturers. Above all, as not only the complexity of products, sizes and film specifications permanently increases. Also the frame conditions change dynamically, e. g. legal directions which make a high agility necessary when products and packagings have to be changed.

After a brief introduction about Herrmann Ultraschall and the basics of ultrasonic welding, we will discuss the advantages of this technology for flexible packaging. Beside the exciting insights into the history of wet pet food, the strengths of sealing with ultrasound, especially under difficult filling conditions (e. g. filling with freezing products) or filling in sensitive packaging materials (e. g. mono films) will be explained in detail. Practical examples from various fields of application, from food to pet food, complete the overview and make the ultrasonic welding of head seams in stand-up pouches even more comprehensible.

This presentation shows the top 5 trends of the food industry in 2018, illustrated by examples, and the influence on the packaging will be revealed. Which possibilities do these trends provide to the packaging industry, to the pouch? Which challenges do we have to cope with?
The focus is mainly put on bio food. Is bio food packed in a different way?

The initiative PÖPPELMANN blue® has the target, to realize a “real” closed loop of recycling management for plastics. Especially of the new guidelines for plastic packaging of the European Commission the topics recycling-capability of packaging and re-using of recycled material are in the focus of interest. Also for spouted pouches first solutions are in process to close the loop.
For reaching this target, packaging has to be capable for recycling and the recycled material must be usable for the production of new spouts, caps and pouches. To realize this closed loop Pöppelmann FAMAC is currently working on spouted pouch solutions.
